Submission Instructions

Details

SUBMISSIONS. All manuscripts should be concise: no more than 7,500 words total excluding references and abstract. Tables and figures (including maps) should be carefully composed to achieve the author's goal of clarity of presentation. There is no fixed number set for either figures or tables accompanying a manuscript. Authors should, however, be judicious in their uses of figures and tables. All submissions should be double-spaced, including abstract, text, quotations, and references, with 1-inch page margins. Informational footnotes are not accepted. Authors should prepare a separate title page with their name(s) and affiliation(s), and any acknowledgments, which will not be sent to reviewers. The title of the paper should be repeated directly above the abstract. Authors should email manuscripts as Microsoft Word documents. Figures and tables should be sent as separate files. Email submissions to:

Melissa Amateis, Journals Editorial Assistant, at gpr@unl.edu

The Center can do some in-house mapping at no charge to authors, more information here.

If the manuscript is accepted for publication, author(s) will be asked to send the final document via email as a Microsoft Word document.

RESEARCH INVOLVING HUMAN OR OTHER ANIMAL SUBJECTS. Authors presenting research results of studies using human or other animal subjects must note in the methods section of their manuscripts that an Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, or other appropriate oversight committee at their institution approved all parts of the proposed investigation before it was undertaken, if such prior approval is required.

REVIEW PROCESS. All manuscripts are given double-blind review. Authors should prepare a separate title page with their name(s) and affiliation(s), and any acknowledgments, which will not be sent to reviewers. The title of the paper should be repeated directly above the abstract. Authors should avoid self-identification in the text. When two external reviewers with expertise in the topic have submitted their evaluations, the Editor makes the final decision to publish.

PAGE CHARGES. At this time page charges are fully subsidized by the UNL Center for Great Plains Studies.

POLICY ON WEBSITES. Authors may post only the abstract from their articles on the website of their choice. Complete citation for the article must accompany the abstract. Information on where to order the article or issue must accompany the abstract. Give the complete address and website for Great Plains Research [www.unl.edu/plains/publications/GPR/gpr.shtml].

REPRINTS. Authors will receive a reprint order form by email from the printershortly before publication of the article.

ARTICLE STYLE. The Editor requires that authors write simply and in the first person. Authors should aim to communicate with a broad interdisciplinary audience in jargon-free language and should avoid sexist, racist, or otherwise biased language or intent. The title of the article should be in all caps. The author(s) name(s) are in caps and lower case. Please give the complete address for each author and the email address for the first author. Title should be 10 or fewer words. Line numbering is required.

MAIN HEADINGS are left-justified, all caps, and bold: INTRODUCTION, METHODS, RESULTS, CONCLUSIONS, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, REFERENCES. Subheadings should be left-justified, title caps, and bold.

ABSTRACT. Author should prepare a short abstract of no more than 200 words that will be interesting to and understood by nonspecialists. The abstract should identify the problem addressed in the paper, outline the methodology, and summarize the results. DO NOT put abstract text into italics.

KEYWORDS. Author should identify five to eight keywords to be listed after the abstract.

Illustrations

Permissions

Please include complete permission information for all illustrations. Written permission from the institution or individual holding the copyright for all illustrations must be provided before publication and must include the following statement:

Nonexclusive rights are granted to reprint this illustration in both print and electronic formats for the life of the article.

All costs for obtaining and reprinting images will be the responsibility of the author.

Captions

All captions should be concise and include source and permission information. Please indicate insertion placement in your manuscript.

Figures

All figures should be referenced in the text according to the Style Sheet.

All figures should be at least 2 5/8 in. wide and no more than 7.5 in tall so there is room for a caption under the figure.

Figures may be submitted as black and white grayscale images or color images. The pictures may or may not be color in the print journal. The e-journal will have the color images.

If you want your article to have color images in the print version, you may be requested to pay a fee to offset the additional cost.

Scanned images must be a minimum of 300 ppi (pixels per inch).

Do not insert graphic files into your article. Do not send figures as computer slide presentation graphics or word processing graphics.

Maps

The Center for Great Plains Studies can work with authors to create a map for your journal article. Many times, an article can be enhanced even with the addition of a simple map locating a town or county. More complicated maps will depend on the data available. We can also add styling to map bases you’ve created. Here are some examples. Contact the Editor with specific questions or more information.

Map examples

If you are creating your own map, be sure you included a distance scale and a north arrow. Enlarged details of maps should reflect the same area and shape of the map. Geographic places mentioned in the text should be shown on a map. Use a sans-serif font such as Arial.

Electronic artwork

We accept line art and halftones on disk. If you are supplying the images on disk, please include a directory of files contained on the disk and a hard copy print out of each figure. Hard copy must match the digital file.

Halftone images should be scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi (pixels per inch). Line art should be scanned at 1200 ppi. Please note that many images downloaded from or saved for the Internet are in JPEG, PNG or GIF format and will be 72 dpi and are not acceptable for the printing process.

Indicate the file format of the graphics. We accept TIFF, EPS format and large JPEG files.

Frequently asked questions

Should I insert my images in the text of my article?

No, please submit each image as a separate file.

What format do you prefer for image files?

We prefer TIFF, EPS or large JPEG images.

What resolution size is preferred for images?

For print publication we need images that are 300 dpi or larger. To change the dpi in Photoshop, you first need a picture that is at least 2,000 pixels in its smallest measurement. From the menu, choose: Image > Image Size. Then UNCHECK the 'Resample Image' checkbox on the bottom, if you don't do this, it will make the picture grainy. You'll see that the pixel dimensions are no longer editable. Then change the resolution to 300. Always save a new copy.

Can I download images from a website and submit them to you?

Images downloaded from a website are sometimes low resolution and not suitable for print.

Do I need permission to use images?

Yes, any images that are not in the public domain or created by you will need permission from the institution or individual that owns them.

Can I submit color images?

We can print color images, but there is a limited number available in each issue. Contact our Journals Assistant for more information.

Can I submit images of any size?

We prefer images be larger than 2 5/8 inches wide with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

What about photographs I take myself?

No problem as long as they are good quality images as already described here.

Will Great Plains Research cover the costs if there are charges to reprint images?

The cost for permission to reprint must be paid by the author.

The images I have are not very good. Can you still use them?

If you are unsure about the quality of your images, please send us a copy and we will let you know if the image can be used.

The images have watermarks / scratches / smudges. Can you still use them?

If they are historical photos our policy is to use them as they appear. If they are contemporary images we would not recommend using them.

If I send you original photographs or slides will they be returned?

Yes, we will return all original photographs or slides after publication is complete.

Can you crop a photograph and use only part of the image for the article?

If necessary we can use a detail of a photograph if we have permission for the full-size photograph.
