Publications

The Center sponsors long-term research programs, multidisciplinary journals, and other publications on plains topics. Great Plains Quarterly and Great Plains Research are multidisciplinary journals promoting research and creative scholarship on plains topics.

The Atlas of the Great Plains, Encyclopedia of the Great Plains and the Journals of Lewis & Clark are long-term projects unique to the Center for Great Plains Studies.

Great Plains Quarterly

Humanities scholarly journal

The Center for Great Plains Studies has several purposes in publishing the Great Plains Quarterly. Its general purpose is to use this means to promote appreciation of the history and culture of the people of the Great Plains and to explore their contemporary social, economic, and political problems. The Center seeks further to stimulate research in the Great Plains region by providing a publishing outlet for scholars interested in the past, present, and future of the region.

Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Great Plains Research publishes original research and scholarly reviews of important advances in the natural and social sciences with relevance to and special emphases on environmental, economic and social issues in the Great Plains. It includes reviews of books and reports on symposia and conferences that included sessions on topics pertaining to the Great Plains.

Encyclopedia of the Great Plains

The Encyclopedia is a single volume more than 900 pages with:

  • twenty-seven major topics
  • an interpretive essay introducing each topic
  • twenty to sixty shorter, individual entries per topic
  • special attention to different experiences by gender, race, and ethnicity
  • a detailed index
  • many maps and illustrations

The Atlas of the Great Plains serves as a resource for citizens, policy-makers, business-persons, students, teachers, librarians and others both within and beyond the boundaries of the region.
